Consumed by 84% of office workers every day, coffee has been subject to a myriad of myths and misconceptions over the years. From its perceived effects on health to its impact on productivity, the discourse surrounding coffee consumption is often packed with misinformation.

At Oasis Coffee & Vending, we’re here to set the record straight! Read on as we debunk six common coffee myths, separating fact from fiction.

The Productivity & Health Benefits Of Coffee

Coffee is more than just a great-tasting beverage. Beyond its rich flavour and aroma, it’s renowned for its ability to enhance productivity and mental alertness. Its caffeine content acts as a stimulant, helping individuals stay focused and energised throughout the day. Moreover, studies have shown that moderate coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of certain health conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes and liver disease.

Coffee has also been linked to an increase in the release of mood-boosting neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. But despite the copious amounts of research, myths surrounding the drink are still rife!

Myth 1 – Does Coffee Dehydrate You?

Contrary to popular belief, moderate coffee consumption does not lead to dehydration. While caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it may increase urine production, the overall hydration provided by a cup of coffee outweighs any potential diuretic effect. In fact, studies have shown that coffee can contribute to our daily fluid intake, providing hydration for the body.

Myth 2 – Coffee Is Addictive

Whilst regular coffee consumption may lead to a mild dependence on caffeine, it does not lead to addiction in the same sense as other substances. Moderate coffee consumption is generally safe for most individuals and doesn’t result in withdrawal when abstaining. The key here is to consume coffee in moderation and be mindful of your individual tolerance levels.

Myth 3 – Coffee Stunts Growth

One of the most frequent coffee myths is its alleged ability to stunt growth. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. In fact, moderate coffee consumption is considered safe for individuals of all ages and is not linked to any negative effects on growth or development. Genetics, nutrition and overall health have a far greater impact on growth than coffee consumption.

Myth 4 – Coffee Increases The Risk Of Chronic Disease

Whilst excessive coffee consumption may temporarily elevate blood pressure, moderate coffee intake is not associated with an increased risk of chronic disease. In reality, it could be your ticket to a healthier and prolonged life.

Numerous studies have suggested that coffee consumption is linked to a reduced risk of chronic diseases. For example, research published by ‘Harvard’s School Of Public Health’ found that adults who drink three to five cups per day have a reduced risk of cardiovascular illnesses and cancer.

Myth 5 – All Coffee Beans Taste The Same

The flavour profile of coffee is influenced by various factors, including the variety of coffee bean, growing conditions and roasting processes. As a result, not all coffee beans taste the same. From fruity and floral to bold and earthy, the diversity of flavours in the world of coffee is vast and varied. Take it from our Director, Chris, who recently discovered honey coffee on his trip to India with Masterost!

Myth 6 – Dark Roast Coffee Has More Caffeine

Despite popular belief, the caffeine content of coffee isn’t determined by its roast level. Whilst dark roast coffee may have a bolder flavour profile, it doesn’t contain more caffeine than lighter roasts. Instead, the longer coffee beans are roasted, the more moisture – and caffeine – is removed.
