In 2018, we generated 43.9 million tonnes of waste in the UK. From print mistakes to junk mail, single-use coffee pods to plastic bottles, 12% of that sum was generated in the commercial sector alone!
It sounds daunting, but by changing our consumer behaviour at work, opting for reusable products or recycling office waste, we can help our environment… and our wallets.
At Oasis Coffee & Vending, we’ve rounded up 7 easy steps that you can implement to reduce office waste. Which will you opt for?
Step 1 – Ban Bottled Water
In total, 7.7 billion single-use plastic bottles are bought across the UK each year. If we ban bottled water at work, can you imagine the impact on office waste? A better option is to install a filtered water machine, with recyclable paper cups. With purer, healthier water, our immune system will receive a valuable boost. And with zero plastic waste, our environment will benefit too.
Step 2 – Go Paperless
In a digital world, there’s no need for us to create paper waste. Ditch the post-it notes and opt for online reminders, cut the printing by sharing presentation slides and reports with your colleagues via email, and swap paper towels in the kitchen and bathroom with hand towels and tea towels. If you do need to use paper from time to time, remember to recycle it afterwards to reduce office waste.
Step 3 – Switch To A Professional Coffee Machine
Ditch the single-use coffee pods and switch to a professional bean-to-cup machine to reduce office waste. It’s better for the environment, better for our taste buds and, as a financially smart investment, is better on expenses too. Think barista-style, without the barista, with a thumbs up from Mother Nature.
Step 4 – Purchase Fairtrade Coffee Beans
With your brand new bean-to-cup coffee machine, you should purchase fairtrade coffee beans. To sell fairtrade products, farmers have to improve soil and water quality, avoid using harmful chemicals and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. In supporting fairtrade initiatives, you’re supporting our environment too, and reducing office waste.
At Oasis Coffee & Vending, we’ve developed our own Bambuco Coffee Beans.
Step 6 – Encourage Packed Lunch Schemes
Encouraging your staff to bring in their lunch from home is cost-effective and better for our environment. Single-use plastic packaging and cutlery are common additions to the office waste pile. To motivate your colleagues, you could even hold themed cuisine days or competitions for the tastiest lunch.
Our sister company Oasis Catering Supplies sells a range of reusable containers, perfect for lunch.
Step 5 – Purchase Reusable, Personalised Cups For Staff Body
Not only will reusable cups dramatically reduce your office waste, personalisation can also boost staff morale by reminding your colleagues that they’re an integral part of a united team.

Step 7 – Compost Your Coffee Beans & Grounds
Could this be the start of the office allotment? Coffee grounds are high in potassium and nitrogen, meaning that they’re ideal for the garden. If you don’t have an outdoor space at work, share them with colleagues who do to reduce office waste.
