Ever heard of the saying, ‘You are what you eat?’. Generally used to encourage kids to eat their greens, in adulthood we’ve come to realise that it is in fact true! The food and drink we consume on a daily basis is paramount to our physical health. And in recent years, studies have even delved into the effect our diets have on our mental health, and in particular our productivity.
When it comes to the workplace, it’s easy to let our healthy diet slip. All too often, convenience food is more accessible, and a local supermarket meal deal seems to do the trick. But does the easy option really contain the nutrients our brain needs to create energy, and perform our tasks well?
In this blog, we’ve explored the link between nutrition, coffee and productivity, and delved into some of the reasons why employers should take it seriously in the workplace.
In 2017, the Institute For Scientific Information On Coffee released a report on the relationship between caffeine consumption and health. In it, they delved into the benefits of the nation’s favourite hot drink, and the link between coffee and productivity.
Drunk by 84% of office workers in the UK every day, coffee is associated with an increase in alertness, concentration and performance. Ingrained into our work culture, it’s also a social drink – as the morning catch up by the vending machine would suggest.
But what is the reasoning behind the link between coffee and productivity? According to Psychology Today, caffeine confuses receptors in the brain and tricks our bodies into thinking it has more energy than it does. Moreover, it can even improve memory and cognitive function; both vital factors of the workplace.
In the office, drinks machines are a hugely important tool for triggering the link between coffee and productivity. They can provide countless cups of the hot drink for our colleagues on the go. And as a staff perk, an installation can increase your organisation’s retention rate, by proving that you’re dedicated to wellbeing.
Though the link between coffee and productivity is strong, the caffeinated drink should always be consumed sensibly. Drink more than four cups a day, and you may experience headaches, insomnia and nervousness. So between each beverage break, turn your attention to the food you’re putting into your body too!
Food has a direct effect on your cognitive performance. And during the working day, consuming the wrong type of it can seriously impair productivity. A 2021 study of workers in the US, for example, found that employees with unhealthy diets are up to 66% less productive than their colleagues who regularly consume wholegrains and vegetables. Moreover, it’s well known that highly processed diets can cause fatigue and eventually lead to obesity.
Access to nutritional food is key, as tight schedules and busy diaries often mean convenience food is the easiest choice. Generally high in carbohydrates and sugar, these options can limit our colleague’s efficiency at work. But vending solutions, such as micro-markets, can diversify choice.
As the brain consumes 20% of the total energy within our bodies, your colleagues need food and drink options to power it. These include;
A form of slow release energy, whole wheat and wholegrain foods help our body to maintain a steady source of glucose to the brain.
In your micro-market, you may consider stocking wholegrain porridge for breakfast. And in your snack vending machine, a wholegrain wrap with added salad is an optimum choice.
It’s in the name! Superfoods such as blueberries, dark leafy greens and seeds are key to human health. Packed with high levels of antioxidants, they’re extremely effective at eliminating or minimising toxins in our bodies.
In your snack station, fresh fruit and nuts are nutritional snack options to provide during the working day.
We’ve already explored the link between coffee and productivity, alongside its key benefits of alertness, concentration and performance. But did you know that access to filtered water is just as important?
In the workplace, hydration is key. And chilled water coolers will provide your colleagues with access to clean drinking water on the go.
